Twin Shadow

On his 6th Studio album Georgie, Dominican-Polish-American artist Twin Shadow explored what he loves most about music: creating an undeniable environment within the sonics. In the case of Georgie, he decided to make an album with no drums—an album that stands out by doing what most modern pop music does not: taking away the beat.

Twenty-year-old artist EKKSTACY had already dealt with a lifetime of depression and anxiety before a severe mental health episode at age 17 led him to drug-induced psychosis and a suicide attempt. As he bounced back, EKKSTACY immersed himself in music. “I really needed something like an outlet,” he says, “because I didn't have anybody. So I started writing.” Already a fan of the SoundCloud rap that had blown up in his early teens, he now binged on moody indie rock with the same intensity, in his downtime between shifts at an Amazon warehouse. Working alone and teaching himself as he went, EKKSTACY channeled his musical obsessions and PTSD into songs with brutally honest lyrics about self-harm and sadness, and slate-grey production that recalls early-80s post-punk. When he began posting tracks like his breakthrough single “i walk this earth all by myself” to streaming services, he found an eager audience awaiting him. When a friend crunched the numbers and told EKKSTACY he was making enough money from Spotify to pay his rent, he quit his job the same day.

Chalk

Chalk is an Irish post-punk/electronic trio based in Belfast that was formed in 2019 after meeting at film school. Influenced by their love of film and the emerging Belfast dance scene, Chalk’s image-driven soundscape is composed of wailing guitars, a relentless rhythm section, and a raw, visceral spoken-word style. Their visual approach then interweaves with their sound in an evocative fashion. The trio released their debut EP ‘Conditions’ in May 2023 via Mother Artists.

Bells Larsen is a Montreal-based singer-songwriter whose music weaves together cathartic lyrics and memorable melodies. Drawing influence from Adrianne Lenker and Elliott Smith, Larsen seeks to distil the personal within the universal. Shortly before the pandemic, Larsen began to conceptualise the makings for a record: struck by and still healing from the death of his first love, Larsen wanted to tell thoughtful stories and ask big questions about the experience of loss in its many guises. The result is his 2022 debut album, “Good Grief”, which bridges the gaps between I, you, and we to narrate an intentional meditation on what it means to grapple with loss in the twenty-first century. Larsen has played many festivals across Canada—including School Night, Toronto Jazz Festival, Winnipeg Folk Festival, and Pop Montreal—and looks forward to showcasing his music internationally in 2023. Larsen is currently working on his second record, which documents his gender transition through the synthesis of his pre and post testosterone (higher/feminine and lower/masculine) vocals.

Truck Violence (Montréal, QC) is a medley that wails its way through the bitters of modern Western Canadian hardcore and folk, an honesty and shamelessness in disappointment that is both a comfort and a stern regard. Starting in 2021 with a move from the prairies of Alberta to Montréal, guitarist-banjoist Paul Lecours and singer-poet Karsyn Henderson, from sticks to city, have had to adapt whilst maintaining roots and authenticity. Informed by punk, shoegaze and sludge, their unique sound is the product of a multiple-project span that saw an array of sonic changes.With the full-length release of Violence (July 5th, 2024 via Mothland), the route is set for Truck Violence’s crashing ode to their roots and violent betterment to continue at full speed. Aiming to embrace the catharsis of hardcore, while commemorating their roots in folk and country music, this debut long-player from the Montréal four-piece is concerned with the all-too-hushed addiction, abuse and dysfunction in isolated country families. Highly recommended for fans of earnest heavy music with an experimental edge à la Show Me The Body, Chat Pile or The Chariot.

Ribbon Skirt is a post-punk/art rock band from Montreal, Quebec (FKA Love Language). Fronted by Anishinaabe singer Tashiina Buswa, the band has performed at major festivals across North America, including Sled Island, Sappyfest, SXSW, New Colossus, and Pop Montreal, sharing the stage with acts like Dehd, Ombiigizi, Marnie Stern, and Enumclaw. Ribbon Skirt is currently finalizing their debut album, set for release in 2025, produced by Scott Munro (Preoccupations). The album, mixed by Greg Saunier (Deerhoof), marks a shift towards a darker, more introspective sound, exploring themes of memory, grief, and Buswa’s connection to her Indigenous identity.
