Radio Free AliceWith an operatic swagger angular guitar driven sound, Melbourne’s Radio Free Alice emerged with an art school musical palette, painted from a suburban Australian canvas. Immediate and arresting rock arrangements from the 4 piece band meld with frontman Noah Learmonth’s distinctive yearning throaty vocal, harking to the stylings of Ian Curtis and Robert Smith. Guitars with clean tones and clever notes, melodic bass lines, urgent drumbeats, and the occasional sax translate the band’s DIY recordings to an energetic, charismatic live show from the young quartet.
Following 2023 singles “Paris Is Gone” and “Look What You’ve Done”, which have received support from triple j, FBi and 3RRR, the band have opened for Django Django, The Snuts, Sorry and a sold out four week residency at inner Melbourne’s Nighthawk. The band’s captivating live show saw them emerge from Brisbane’s BIGSOUND showcase as one of the breakout artists for the year, as they lead into SXSW Sydney and a run of summer shows around Australia. More music and an EP to come from this exciting new young talent this year. -
The Wombats
The Wombats return with their most sophisticated and sonically adventurous album yet. Oh! The Ocean (out February 21st 2025) grooves with social anxiety, internal strife and the tribulations of LA life, where Murph lives. Once again they provide escapism from the mundane with songwriting that has profound meaning to audiences in turbulent times, packaged in the band’s deceptively cuddly and playful façade.
Oh! The Ocean marks a new era for the band, moving away from previous synthetic sounds to embrace a warmer-blooded approach. Taking 50 new songs into a studio in Echo Park, LA, in July 2024 for six weeks of sessions with new producer John Congleton (St Vincent, Wallows, Death Cab for Cutie), The Wombats shunned the AI studio techniques that have become prevalent in modern-day recording, in order to make a far more natural and human album.
Alongside familiar sounds they explore new genres from glistening tech rock to sci-fi pop, futuristic fuzz rock to bluesy rock’n’roll, with touches of disco and hip-hop-inflections.

The LibertinesKdysi symbol chaosu, dnes kapela, která zní pevněji a sebevědoměji než kdy dřív. Debut Up the Bracket a následné eponymní album definovaly dekádu raného milénia. Lehkost The Smiths, odvaha The Stone Roses nebo nadhled Blur. You’d Better Run, Run, Run, Boy…

Vanessa Carlton"Always building up, falling apart. Love is an art," sings Vanessa Carlton on the title track of her sixth album, Love Is An Art. Like the record itself, the song is a meditation on the eternal seesaw that is human connection: the push, the pull, the balance, the bottoming out. It's that constantly evolving nature of love, expectations and compassion that Carlton analyzes from all angles on Love Is An Art, from romantic, to parental, to the friends that hold us up and the leaders that repeatedly let us down. And on tracks like the album's opener, "I Can't Stay the Same," that also includes the relationship with the person staring back at us in the mirror, each and every morning.
"Love is the energy you put out into the world," says the Nashville-based Carlton, who was inspired in part by the 1956 book The Art of Loving by philosopher Erich Fromm, and by stories and struggles both in her interior world and the world around her. "And it can be so incredibly messy at times."
Produced by Dave Fridmann (MGMT, Flaming Lips), Love Is An Art finds Carlton reckoning with toxic relationships (the confessional "Miner's Canary"), eternal partnership ("Companion Star") and the children who fill the world with love and grace while politicians fill their pockets (the passionate "Die, Dinosaur," written after the shootings in Parkland, Florida). And true to Carlton’s skill as both a lyricist and an instrumentalist, the arrangements on Love Is An Art tell these tales as vibrantly as the words themselves: piano parts that speak of rage and tenderness, synths that burst and glow like dawn.
Love Is An Art doesn't just explore connections – it was also born of one. Carlton wrote the album with the acclaimed Nashville-based singer-songwriter Tristen, camped out and working while her daughter napped. "This record is about being out of my comfort zone," says Carlton. "What's going to happen when we do things that people assume are not naturally a match, like working with Dave Fridmann? I loved the idea of working with someone who’s known for a palette that isn’t associated with me, but it was a fit the second we started working together. Or what could happen when I sit with another writer, and just collaborate?"
The result is an extremely dynamic LP filled with sticky melodies and haunting phrases as well as experimental constructions: super high highs, super low lows, and song structures that break the mold from the expected. Unlike her previous, critically-acclaimed 2015 album Liberman, which Carlton describes as having a calming, almost meditative palette, Love Is An Art reads, and sounds, "red." Huge. Passionate. The color of a beating heart.
"I want to run, but I won’t get very far," Carlton sings on "The Only Way to Love," the album's first official single. "Cause I can’t fight the force of my young beating heart. Like a soldier's steady march, answering the call. It’s the only way to love." It's a song about loving with everything you've got – that love itself is precious and rare enough to commit to, above all. "When you believe in a relationship, in a connection, you are actually believing in yourself," she adds.
Carlton has constantly challenged that belief, in both herself and the expectations that surround her throughout her lengthy, accomplished career: she attended both the School of American Ballet and Columbia University, and was discovered as a singer-songwriter/pianist when a cassette tape demo was given to legendary music impresario Ahmet Ertegun. With her debut single "A Thousand Miles," Carlton soared to the top of the Billboard charts and garnered multiple Grammy nominations, though that song is only a small fraction of the body of work and artistic identity she's developed since then, ever evolving and growing as a performer and songwriter. In the summer of 2019, she pushed that even further, making her Broadway debut as Carole King in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.
There's a striking image on the cover of Love Is An Art: it's a delicate hand grabbing a tiger by the tail, but it's not meant to conjure the familiar colloquialism. Instead, it captures something different. It’s a about going after something bigger than you, more powerful than you, something that you’ll never be able to really control: but you grab it anyway. Something like love. That's the spirit of Love Is An Art – connections aren’t easy to make, and sometimes we fail. But it's always worth trying. As Carlton sings on "Die, Dinosaur," the hope comes when there's nothing left to lose.
"Why not grab the wild animal?" Carlton asks. "And see what happens?"

Everything EverythingTranslating existentialist insights of postmodernism into songs by creating a completely indefinable musical style that is jazzed up into a pulsating, danceable, amorphous fusion – that’s something that Everything Everything have probably realised over the past 15 years more unflinchingly and disillusioned than any other band on the planet. Progressive indie rock goes shoulder to shoulder with alternative dance music, an almost mathematically achieved wave revival soars to bold heights on epic arrangements by four absurdly gifted multi-instrumentalists and flies to the peaks of contemporary art pop. With albums such as the globally acclaimed ‘Get To Heaven’ (2015) and the dystopian, thoroughly conceptualised ‘Mountainhead’ (2024), Everything Everything achieve what only very few projects manage these days: to create an entirely idiosyncratic style – unadapted, impenetrable, inimitable. Are you looking for a musical experience that divides your life into before and after? An auditory adventure without comparison? Then you have an appointment in Hamburg at the end of September.

We Are ScientistsHeather Small, born 20th January 1965, grew up on a West London council estate. From going to Sunday school and attending the 'Good News Club', religion and faith became an important aspect of Heather's life. Growing up in 70's Britain and not wanting to be stereotyped or treated differently, Heather knew that she wanted to make something of herself. Even though Heather battled with shyness and severe nerves, she joined her first band Hot!House who released two albums in the late 80's. As Part of M People, hits such as 'Moving On Up', 'One Night In Heaven' and 'Search For The Hero' and albums like Elegant Slumming, Bizarre Fruit and Fresco achieving massive worldwide success, Heather became one of the seminal British voices of the 1990s, with the band winning the Best British Dance Act Award at the Brits in 1994 and 1995, as well as the Mercury Music Prize for Elegant Slumming.
Heather has since had great successes with two solo albums – the title track of her 'Proud' album has gone on to become the soundtrack to a whole host of very special events including London's successful 2012 Olympic bid, the 60th anniversary of VE Day in Trafalgar Square, the launch of Queen Mary 2, the Tsunami Relief Concert, England's victory at the Rugby World Cup celebrations, and the official ceremony marking the handover of the Olympic Games from Beijing to London. And when Oprah Winfrey was looking for a song to sum up the work she'd been striving to achieve over her twenty-year career, she got in touch with Heather, who somehow managed to squeeze in a trip across the Atlantic to perform on the show right in the middle of her last UK tour with M People ('If Oprah calls, you go!' she laughs, adding that the first lady of chat was 'very sweet to me').
In 2008, Heather embarked on a journey that would see her dance her way into the public’s affection as she became a contestant in Series 6 of the BBC's 'Strictly Come Dancing'. Heather's infectious personality and her trademark sense of humour earned her appearances on a number of TV news and chat shows including Paul O'Grady, Alan Titchmarsh, GMTV, BBC Breakfast, The Wright Stuff, Newsnight, as well as special appearances on The Weakest Link and Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? 2009 was another busy year for Heather as she took to the road again with her band completing two highly successful UK tours in May and November, performing at over 30 venues nationwide to sell-out crowds. She also continued her TV work with regular slots on music, entertainment, and politics shows, including 'Dancing On Wheels', a wheelchair dancing competition-come-documentary airing on BBC Three in early 2010.
In the Autumn, Heather teamed up with singing sensations Anastacia and Lulu for the critically acclaimed 'Here Come The Girls' – an unforgettable night of feel-good party music and dance, touring arenas across the UK and Ireland during November and December 2010. Well known for her charitable work, Heather was recently made an ambassador for the children’s charity Barnardo's and is continually involved with fundraising and helping lend her valuable support to projects around the country.
Since 2010, Heather has continued to tour and perform at numerous festivals and charity events. She also appeared on the BBC 2 TV show 'The Pilgrimage'.
So what gives Heather the impetus to keep moving forward, to keep challenging herself, to keep trying new things and not resting on her laurels? 'If you got the feeling I do when I sing' she smiles, 'you'd understand'. -

The Royston Club
When The Royston Club released their debut album Shaking Hips And Crashing Cars
in the summer of 2023, the Wrexham band went full throttle, appropriately, as they
raced across the finish line to score their first UK top 20 album. Sold out shows across
the country soon followed, while their formidable live reputation allowed the group –
frontman Tom Faithfull, guitarist Ben Matthias, bass player Dave Tute and drummer
Sam Jones – to become one of the country’s most exciting new acts.
But a great debut album, as many artists have discovered, will only get you so far. It’s
what you do next that really counts.
For The Royston Club, the answer to that conundrum comes in the form of their superb
second album Songs For The Spine, which is the sound of a band taking their chance
to hit the next level, grabbing it with both hands and refusing to let go.
It’s a cohesive and fully formed record that builds on the sonic DNA of their debut, but
the steady hand of producer Rich Turvey effortlessly takes it to the next level. It’s
bigger, more experimental and more heartfelt too. The band say that the title reflects
the individual vignettes of places and people close to their hearts contained with each
song. They are powerful stories in their own right, but they combine on this album to
create an almighty and often beautiful backbone.
There is huge growth to be found too, which reflects just how much The Royston Club
have evolved since album one. Songs like the catchy ‘30/20’ skip along with a classic
Roystons groove that will be welcomed like an old friend by OG devotees, but ‘Shivers’
– the latest song to arrive from the album – feels positively gargantuan. It creeps along
with a slow and steady bassline, before exploding into something that feels destined to
ignite mosh pits across the land when the band hits the road again. Similarly, the slow-
burning epicness of late album highlight ‘Spinning’ – which offers a lyrical show of
solidarity for people going through tough times – feels like something from The Bends-
era Radiohead.
