The time has arrived for TESTAMENT to unleash new thunder to the masses and reveal their thirteenth studio album: Titans OF Creation. Just as the elements of this planet thrive within all living creatures, each musician in TESTAMENT represents a necessary component of this latest musical endeavor. Still filled with a massive and unstoppable energy since their last release, TESTAMENT has taken their style to the next level and present an album that is loyal to the roots of traditional thrash metal while still bringing alluring, brilliant, and progressive ingredients to the table. Bass is showcased, new vocals are introduced, and as expected, the guitarwork of Peterson and Skolnick is greatly complex and mesmerizing.

Eliran Kantor stepped up once again to create a new piece of artwork for the cover of this release. His classic, almost Renaissance style of painting melds beautifully with the ancient, psychological, and enlightened subject matter of the songs. Three monstrous titans stand in the place where the planets are formed. One pours molding liquid which the others hammer into human DNA, twisting and turning into the ring of a newborn planet. Each titan has the flame of a dying star burning in their chest; the origin of the atoms making up the bodies that are bubbling and boiling on the curves of the spiraling helix.

Titans OF Creation has many moods and material contained within; all of which somehow tie into a common philosophy of creation and its necessary counterpart: destruction. “Children Of The Next Level” smashes through the gates as the opening track with a flood of sound that prepares the listener for an abundance of violent thrash. Meanwhile, the lyrics rage about the outrageous philosophies of the Heaven’s Gate cult (founded in 1974).

Songs like “Dream Deceiver” carry more old school sound that will tickle the senses of any common TESTAMENT fan. The lyrics describe being trapped in a dream by an otherworldly female force who is slowly working to degrade the mind. Dreams are part of existence, but when we are asleep we are entirely vulnerable; one of the many mysteries of being human. “Someone’s haunting you and won’t leave you alone; the only time they pick at you is at night when they can control the way you sleep,” describes vocalist Chuck Billy.

“Night of the Witch” features frightening and captivating vocals from Eric Peterson. Carrying a vibe far more akin to Black Metal, Peterson swoops in with a power that melds perfectly with Billy’s ground shaking, guttural growls. Taking some influence from Robert Egger’s 2015 horror masterpiece “The VVitch: A New England Folktale,” the song carries with it a magical quality that directly reflects the mood of the film. At the very end of the track, a theremin howls through the air much like witches rising towards the moon; setting the final tone. “The album has a lot about it that’s fresh to the ear,” explains Peterson.

Written by guitarist Alex Skolnick, “Symptoms” is filled with detailed with intricate guitar work that well represents the complicated and spellbinding journey that comes along with handling depression, mood swings, and a countless list of mental health frustrations. The lyrics in this song discuss a sad truth: that mental illness is more common than we all think, and than many of us are willing to acknowledge. On a lighter note, a vibrant track entitled “The Healers” swings back and forth between waves of death and thrash, heavy and melodic, light and dark. The words are spiritual, and extremely personal. They describe Billy’s own experience dealing with all natural medicine men; the elders of the earth, and how they managed to help him pinpoint and heal his past illness. “City Of Angels” comes bearing an entirely new sound for TESTAMENT. The creeping sludgieness and slow, stalking tempo, walk hand in hand with the almost unbelievably gruesome tale of the Nightstalker Richard Ramierz, all combining to form another stand-out track on the record.

In 2020 the days of writing an album all together in one room are far gone, but to be able to take advantage of technology allows for TESTAMENT to go about a very similar writing process to what they always have. Basic songs are molded, structures are added by everyone in the group, instrumentals are highlighted, and finally the lyrics and vocals are created to finalize the sonic story. Facetime and human on human contact still remain crucial elements to TESTAMENT’s song writing process and at some point throughout, every member physically interacts and writes with one another. In between writing this album, the band toured relentlessly which allowed for less stress, more time in between, and greater inspiration for this album cycle. There was also plenty of anxiety-free and level-headed time for pre-production and the initial recording process with Juan Urteaga of Trident Studios. Andy Sneap was then able to tweak, mix, and master this album to his usual perfection.

TESTAMENT’s process of creation has evolved and progressed yet they’ve remained steadfast over the course of literal decades. While always managing to present the genuine aspects of thrash metal that solidify their existence, they spread into unique horizons through developing crisp and fascinating sounds.

    A JOURNEY THROUGH DARKNESS

1993 marked the unholy inception, when Lord Ahriman and Blackmoon [1993–1996] founded what would become one of the most iconic and intense forces in Black Metal: Dark Funeral. The band’s legendary, self-financed debut EP was recorded at Dan Swanö's Unisound Studio in January 1994 and unleashed upon an unsuspecting world on May 4th that year. The black flame was lit — and it has burned ever brighter since.

Over the decades, Dark Funeral has released a series of now-classic albums, survived multiple lineup changes, and taken their infernal message to over 45 countries, sharing the stage with bands such as Dimmu Borgir, Cannibal Corpse, Deicide, and Immortal.

The 2001 album "Diabolis Interium" was nominated for Best Metal Album at P3 Guld, and in 2002 the band made history by becoming the first foreign metal act to play in Singapore in over a decade.

Their highly praised live album, "De Profundis Clamavi ad Te Domine", cemented their reputation as a devastating live force. Then came 2005’s "Attera Totus Sanctus", produced by Daniel Bergstrand and Örjan Örnkloo, an album that stormed the Swedish metal charts at #3 and marked a new peak in intensity and precision.

Two official DVDs, "Attera Orbis Terrarum – Part I & II", followed, showcasing ferocious performances from Europe and South America — the latter capturing the insane energy of some of their most rabid fans.

In 2009, the band returned with the monumental "Angelus Exuro pro Eternus", recorded with Peter Tägtgren at Abyss Studio. The video for the track "My Funeral", filmed in an abandoned mental hospital, caused such a stir that MySpace banned it — while YouTube views skyrocketed.

    THE MODERN ERA OF DARKNESS

2016’s "Where Shadows Forever Reign", with artwork by Necrolord, introduced Heljarmadr on vocals and signaled a triumphant return to their roots — a chilling blend of atmosphere and brutality that earned awards from Swedish P3 Guld and German Metal Hammer.

In 2018, Lord Ahriman was honored with SKAP’s Metal Award, praised for his mastery of dark moods and for creating music that “sends shivers down the spine.”

Now entering their third decade, Dark Funeral have delivered what is arguably their most ambitious and aggressive album yet: "We Are The Apocalypse". A new era, a new inferno. Produced once again by Daniel Bergstrand, the album brings forth a sound that is simultaneously more expansive and more unrelenting than ever before — a true testament to Lord Ahriman’s vision and commitment to the genre.

    THE CRUSADE CONTINUES

As 2025 unfolds, Dark Funeral remains on the frontlines, touring globally in support of their latest releases. Witness the darkness live — do not miss them when they unleash their ritual in your city.

  • Wolves In the Throne Room
    Wolves In the Throne Room

Nearly two decades into their journey as masters of US Black Metal, Wolves In The Throne

Room have emerged from the forest with PRIMORDIAL ARCANA. Their most majestic

    album to date.

While the proverbial blaze in the northern sky remains the band’s artistic palette of choice,

Primordial Arcana expands upon black metal to include musical forms that pre-date the

genre’s devastating second wave. “After we discovered Metallica and Slayer in our early

teens, the first extreme metal bands we were into were Deicide and Morbid Angel,” Aaron

explains. “So death metal was there from the very beginning, and I think it especially comes

to the fore on this record.”

It’s all more evidence that Wolves In The Throne Room are a band with few

contemporaries. “We have a singular and unique voice in the extreme metal world,” Aaron

says. “We’re coming from an unapologetically real and personal perspective, and we haven't

made any concessions to what's expected of us. We’ve always done things exactly the way

we want to do it and in a super DIY way.”

That methodology has reached a new peak with Primordial Arcana. “We’ve gotten even

deeper into the DIY aspect by building our own recording studio from the ground up, and

producing and mixing the record ourselves,” Aaron points out. “And now we’re making our

own videos within the local wilderness. So we’ve been able to keep all of the creative

control between the three of us while raising the bar creatively. As we become more insular

and rely on ourselves more, the art gets better and sharper—a more perfect representation

of what the band is all about.”

  • Sear Bliss
    Sear Bliss

The Hungarian symphonic black metal/folk metal outfit Sear Bliss has earned a reputation for being one of the more melodic bands in Eastern Europe's extreme metal scene. Sear Bliss can be intensely aggressive, and they have the familiar black metal elements (including sinister-sounding rasp vocals, blastbeats, and dark subject matter). But in contrast to vicious, unforgiving black metal bands like Norway's Gorgoroth and Sweden's Marduk, Sear Bliss have been a lot more accessible by mainstream metal standards and combined forcefulness with musicality, intricacy, and nuance. East European folk has influenced their writing, and so have old-school power metal artists such as Queensrÿche and Ronnie James Dio. Further, Sear Bliss have not been shy about using instruments that one ordinarily does not associate with black metal, including the trombone, the trumpet, the flute, and the violin. Sear Bliss was formed in Szombathely, Hungary in 1993 by lead singer András Nagy (who has played bass, guitar, and keyboards with the band) and bassist Csaba Tóth, formerly of the Hungarian band Extreme Deformity; the rest of Sear Bliss' original lineup consisted of guitarist János Barbarics and drummer Norbert Keibinger, two ex-members of the Hungarian band Animosity. Like so many of Europe's extreme metal combos, Sear Bliss has been a revolving door over the years -- and it didn't take the band long to experience an abundance of lineup changes. Tóth left in 1994, and 1994's new arrivals included trumpeter Gergely Szücs, keyboardist Winter, former Extreme Deformity vocalist Csaba Csejtei (who joined Sear Bliss as a guitarist) and Csejtei's brother Zoltán Csejtei (who had been Extreme Deformity's guitarist but joined Sear Bliss as a vocalist). In 1995, Sear Bliss recorded their first demo, The Pagan Winter, and the lineup changes continued; Keibinger left, and newcomers included keyboardist/trumpeter Gergely Szücs and drummer Zoltán Csejtei; it was also in 1995 that Sear Bliss signed a deal with Mascot/Two Moons Records. Sear Bliss' first official full-length album, Phantoms, was recorded and released in 1996, and they started recording their next album, The Haunting, in 1997 -- a year that saw the departure of Winter and both of the Csejtei brothers and the arrival of drummer Zoltán Schönberger and guitarist Viktor Scheer. More lineup changes came in 1999, when Scheer, Szücs, and Barbarics took off and guitarist András Horváth P. arrived. Guitarist István Neubrandt and trombonist Zoltán Pál joined in 2000, and Horváth was fired in 2001, which was also the year in which Sear Bliss signed with the Red Stream label. Red Stream released Grand Destiny in 2001, followed by Forsaken Symphony in 2002 and Glory and Perdition in 2004. More lineup changes followed in the mid- to late 2000s, but being a revolving door didn't prevent Sear Bliss from continuing to deliver quality albums. In 2007, Sear Bliss recorded their excellent Candlelight release, The Arcane Odyssey, with a lineup consisting of Nagy on vocals, bass, and keyboards, Schönberger on drums, Pál on trombone, and Neubrandt and Péter Kovács on guitar. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi
