LE FORUM ET LE FESTIVAL AU FIL DE L OISE PRESENTEN : TIGRAN HAMASYANVéritable virtuose du piano au groove puissant, Hamasyan fusionne avec aisance une improvisation jazz intense et le rock progressif avec la riche musique folklorique de son Arménie natale.Né en 1987 à Gyumri, il commence son parcours musical dès l’enfance, dans son foyer, où il est exposé à une grande diversité d’influences. Il commence le piano à l’âge de trois ans, se produit dans des festivals et concours dès onze ans, et remporte le concours de piano du Montreux Jazz Festival en 2003. Il sort son premier album, World Passion, en 2004, à seulement dix-sept ans. L’année suivante, il gagne le prestigieux Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition.Parmi ses autres albums figurent New Era, Red Hail, A Fable — pour lequel il reçoit une Victoires de la Musique —, Shadow Theater et Luys i Luso, enregistré avec le Chœur de chambre d’État d’Erevan, centré sur la musique sacrée arménienne allant du Ve au XXe siècle.Son premier album chez Nonesuch, Mockroot (2015), remporte un Echo Jazz Award du meilleur instrumentiste international (piano). Suivent An Ancient Observer (2017), l’EP For Gyumri (2018), Revisiting the Film (2021) et StandArt (2022). En 2021, il reçoit également le Deutscher Jazzpreis dans la catégorie internationale piano/claviers. Il a publié des albums chez Plus Loins, Universal France, Nonesuch et ECM.Son nouvel album conceptuel The Bird of a Thousand Voices sort en août 2024 chez naïve, marquant sa première collaboration avec le label. Tigran y compose, orchestre et arrange un projet très attendu, mêlant ses racines folkloriques à des influences rock. Le premier single, « The Kingdom », existe aussi sous forme d’expérience interactive via un jeu en ligne.Ce double album s’inspire d’un conte arménien ancien dans lequel un héros part dans des mondes invisibles pour retrouver un oiseau mythique aux mille chants, capable de réveiller les peuples et de ramener l’harmonie dans le monde. La version scénique, une œuvre de théâtre musical transmédia mêlant installation lumineuse immersive, théâtre d’ombres, voix numériques programmées et musique live, a été créée au Holland Festival en juin 2024.

With pianist/composer Tigran Hamasyan, potent jazz improvisation fuses with the rich folkloric music of his native Armenia.
Turning 30 in 2017, he’s one of the most remarkable and distinctive jazz-meets-rock pianists of his generation. A piano virtuoso with groove power.
Tigran’s latest adventurous project is 2017’s An Ancient Observer, his second solo album, his eighth overall as a sole leader, and his sophomore recording for Nonesuch. (Overall, this is his eighth recording as a sole leader.) Conceptually, An Ancient Observer is a poignant album focusing on the art of observing.
Tigran’s career has included an impressive number of accolades, including top piano award at the 2013 Montreux Jazz Festival and the grand prize at the prestigious 2006 Thelonious Monk Jazz Piano Competition. One of his earliest albums, 2008’s New Era, was championed by one scribe who wrote that “with more seasoning and a calming maturity not driven by merely showing off, Hamasyan is certain to elevate his art to a top tier of jazz and world music expressionism.” Several years later he certainly made that statement prophetic as he was applauded by NPR Music: “With startling combinations of jazz, minimalist, electronic, folk and songwriterly elements…Hamasyan and his collaborators travel musical expanses marked with heavy grooves, ethereal voices, pristine piano playing and ancient melodies. You’ll hear nothing else like this in 2015.”
He has recorded on various labels —France’s Red Loins, Nonesuch and ECM— with his electro-acoustic powerhouse trio as well as the Yerevan State Chamber Choir for his 2015 Luys i Luso project focused on Armenian sacred music stretching stylistically from the 5th century to the 20th century.
In 2015, Tigran garnered the prestigious Paul Acket Award at the North Sea Jazz Festival and the following year earned the Echo Award (the German Grammy) for best international piano album of the year for his superb recording Mockroot.
Tigran has toured internationally for a fan bass that ranges from adventurous jazz aficionados to progressive hardcore metal listeners. Of his new recording, which he will be touring this spring in Europe and the U.S., Tigran says, “An Ancient Observer is presenting the observation of the world we live in now and the weight of our history we carry on our shoulders that is influencing us even if we don't realize it. This album is the observation of influences and experiences I had.”
