Nikolaj Steen
25 years ago, Nikolaj Steen put his singing career on hold to work behind the scenes as a producer and songwriter, and later to focus on film and television as a screenwriter and director. Now he returns to his musical roots.
Selected songs from his back catalogue — dating all the way back to his debut album in 1987 and onwards — will be performed in new versions. Between songs, Nikolaj Steen shares stories from his long career in Danish music, film and television.
“Nikolaj Steen – Solo | 25 Years Later” marks a rare moment where a long artistic life is gathered and shared on stage.
Nikolaj Steen is an artist whose career spans music, film and storytelling, both in front of and behind the camera. He has worked as a solo artist, musician, songwriter, producer, actor, director and screenwriter.
He debuted as a studio musician at just 14 years old in 1982 and released his first solo album Nickname in 1987. In the early 1990s he lived in the USA, where he was signed to the American record label Imago Records and toured extensively across the country, playing clubs, larger venues and festivals.
After returning home, he continued his solo career in Denmark, recorded four additional albums and toured actively at festivals, open-air stages and venues throughout the country — before stepping away as a singer in 2001.
After that, Nikolaj Steen gradually moved into the background of the Danish music scene. For a number of years he worked as a producer and songwriter, and from 1996 to 2014 he was drummer and musical director for Sanne Salomonsen. At the same time, he contributed to a wide range of Danish music projects, often without being the one in the spotlight.
In 2014 he left music behind completely to focus on film and television. Since then he has built a notable career as a screenwriter, director and creative producer, and is behind series such as Minkavlerne, 10 Years Later, Hand in Hand, Namastay and Laban’s Christmas, as well as the feature film Oldboys.
In 2026, Nikolaj Steen returns to the stage as a singer with “Nikolaj Steen – Solo | 25 Years Later”.
