Skinny Living have carved out a reputation as one of the UK’s most soulful and uncompromising indie bands. Their music... a raw blend of acoustic soul, alt-indie and modern grit has earned them millions of streams and a loyal grassroots following built through word-of-mouth and unforgettable live shows. Known for harmonies that soar and lyrics that speak to resilience, love, and hope, Skinny Living make music that feels unpolished and deeply human, with songs that linger long after the last note fades.
Formed after a chance meeting at an open mic in Wakefield, the band unites the haunted yet hopeful voice of Belfast-born frontman Ryan Johnston with the intricate guitar work and harmonies of Danny Hepworth. Their name reflects their roots: “Skinny Living is a term that describes the financial reality and lifestyle of the working class. Hard graft on a low income with a lust for life, passion for family and an optimistic attitude about the future.”
After the success of their album ‘Day By Day’ that claimed the UK No. 1 Independent Album chart position in 2024, Skinny Living return with their latest release, EP 9, the culmination of a plan set in motion almost a decade ago. Inspired by Nikola Tesla’s 3-6-9 theory, the trilogy was envisioned as a creative cycle that would bring Skinny Living’s first era to a close. These four songs are their most fearless yet intimate, anthemic and sonically daring, capturing the honesty and harmony that have defined the band while pointing toward evolution.
With EP 9, Skinny Living stand at once in closure and renewal... a chapter ending with purpose, and a horizon wide open with possibility.

Skinny Living
Skinny Living’s story is one of struggle, troubling situations and relentless hard graft. It’s also one of synchronicity, chance meetings, and the unflinching belief that their glorious indie soul music will reach the audience it deserves.
Echoing Bill Withers, Van Morrison, The Isley Brothers and Bobby Caldwell, their songs shimmer with a timeless, gentle beauty, exquisite vocal harmonies and a lyrical wisdom that inspires optimism and reflection in equal measure.
The band's sound is defined by two acoustic guitars and vocal harmonies delivered by Wakefield natives Will Booth and Danny Hepworth, while the exquisite and ever-so-slightly haunted vocal and lyricism in the midst of it all belongs to frontman Ryan Johnston, born in Belfast to a Catholic mother from the Republican area and a Protestant father from the other side of town. Their polar opposite backgrounds meant a family move to Bangor before Ryan later moved to England, where he met Will and Danny at an open mic night and formed the band.
“Skinny Living is a term that describes the financial reality and lifestyle of the working class. Hard graft on a low income with a lust for life, passion for family and an optimistic attitude about the future.”
With over 85 million streams worldwide, Skinny Living will be releasing their debut album ‘Day by Day’ on October 11th 2024.
In the band’s own words, “‘Day by Day’ moves through the emotions of life. Lyrically, it shines a light on relationships between family and close friends, those we dedicate our care and time to. It deals with the triumphs and mistakes we make along the way and focuses on the power we all have as individuals to pull through when times get hard, both alone and together. Musically, this album is strongly influenced by soul music, and draws inspiration from timeless indie, folk, pop, RnB and alternative music.”
