Het legendarische Australische cult-trio The Necks staat al bijna 40 jaar aan de top van de internationale avant-garde. Chris Abrahams (piano), Tony Buck (drums) en Lloyd Swanton (bas) werken al achttien albums lang aan hun onorthodoxe sound: lange stukken die zich langzaam ontrafelen, drijvend op een aanhoudende diepe groove. De bedrieglijke eenvoud van hun muziek geeft bij elke luisterbeurt nieuwe details prijs. Niet helemaal avant-gardistisch, noch minimalistisch, ambient of jazz: de muziek van The Necks is helemaal hors catégorie. Er zijn weinig bands die decennialang consequent zo’n hoge kwaliteit halen en tegelijkertijd zo herkenbaar klinken. luister maar eens naar hun eerste album Sex (1989) en vervolgens naar hun laatste album Disquiet (2025).

The legendary Australian cult trio The Necks has been at the forefront of the international avant-garde for almost 40 years. Chris Abrahams (piano), Tony Buck (drums), and Lloyd Swanton (bass) have been working on their unorthodox sound for eighteen albums: long pieces that unfold slowly, floating on a sustained deep groove. The seemingly simplicity of their music reveals new details with every listen. Neither entirely avant-garde, minimalist, ambient, nor jazz, The Necks' music is entirely hors catégorie. Few bands have consistently achieved such high quality for decades while remaining so recognizable. Just listen to their first album, Sex (1989), and then their latest album, Disquiet (2025).
