Tromsø World proudly opens its 2026 lineup with one of the most powerful, original, and emotionally resonant voices in the Nordic region: Katarina Barruk.
An artist who doesn’t just perform — she carries an entire language, culture, and history with her on stage.
With her magnetic presence and a voice that can quiet an entire room, Barruk has emerged as one of Sápmi’s most defining musical voices. Her music blends joik, pop, contemporary art music, and symphonic soundscapes into something unmistakably her own — raw, poetic, boundary-breaking.
A fierce advocate for her critically endangered mother tongue, Ume Sámi, Barruk brings the language to global audiences with pride and passion. In recent years she has appeared at some of the world’s most respected festivals, including Roskilde, Øyafestivalen, Reeperbahn, WOMEX, and Iceland Airwaves.
In 2025 she made history as the first Sámi artist ever to perform at the legendary BBC Proms, taking the stage at Royal Albert Hall with the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra and Pekka Kuusisto.
Her work spans collaborations with major orchestras, commissions for theatre productions, award-winning performances, and innovative cross-disciplinary projects. Her critically acclaimed album Ruhttuo further cemented her reputation as a groundbreaking artist with unwavering artistic integrity.
At Tromsø World 2026, Barruk brings her full musical universe to Hovedscenen at Kulturhuset — a performance woven from strength, vulnerability, ancient tradition, and modern expression.
This will be one of the festival’s most memorable moments. A concert you don’t just hear — you feel it

Katarina BarrukKatarina Barruk is known as one of Norway’s most talented live artists. Over the last decade she has toured through Europe, giving highly appreciated concerts. Her performance at this years Øya Festival was acclaimed as ¨Øya’s biggest revelation¨ by The Line of Best Fit (https://rb.gy/13cck).
Barruk’s unique, distinctive voice, in combination with a steadfast presence on stage creates a space of vulnerability and strength that is unlike anything else. She delivers a fierce, yet deeply down-to-earth, mix of pop music, traditional yoik and improvisational elements. Katarina sings in her mother tongue, Ume Sámi language. The language is on UNESCO’s red list of critically endangered languages, but many Umesámis are taking the language back. I do not use Ume Sámi language in music to prove a point, it is more about the fact that I can be myself. Doing music in Ume Sámi is a way of inviting my friends and the audience into my universe, where Ume Sámi is norm, highly topical, and alive.
