Experimental Rap

UTILITY is the solo project of Sydney-based composer, producer and Trackwork founder Austin Benjamin, working across experimental composition, rap, sound art and underground club music. Defying categorisation, his practice is defined by long-form collaboration and cross-regional exchange, connecting Australian underground scenes with artists across Africa, Europe, UK and the Americas. His work is recognised for being bold, artistically risk-taking, and expanding boundaries of genre, discipline and community via music projects, visual direction and curatorship.

Through Trackwork, he’s shaped key moments in contemporary Australian club and rap culture — from bringing Durban Gqom pioneers Formation Boyz into an ARIA-nominated release Wassa, to producing 3badman, the first record created inside an Australian maximum-security prison. As a sound artist and composer, UTILITY has released new music by experimental pioneer Alvin Lucier (Room 40), with significant commissions include works for the Australian Art Orchestra, MONA FOMA, and City of Sydney for the notable Sydney Town Hall pipe organ.

Through an ouput that spans international touring, curatorial projects and collaborations across contemporary music, visual art and underground club infrastructure, UTILITY’s creative world is at the cutting edge. It is now, it is the Future.
